SHEPARD
SHEPARD is a support group for all members of the LGBTQQIAA* community who choose to become involved. The name is an acronym that stands for Stopping Homophobia, Eliminating Prejudice and Restoring Dignity. The name was also chosen in part to commemorate Matthew Shepard, a student at University of Wyoming who was brutally murdered in 1998 in an event that remains one of the most discussed LGBT hate crimes in modern American History.
Members of the club represent parts of the LGBTQQIAA community and people from any walk of life are welcome to take part in the events held by this club throughout the year. Events that have been held by this club include Day of Silence, The Laramie Project, World AIDS Day, Trans Day of Remembrance, and many wonderful others.
In addition to providing support SHEPARD’s mission is to build a safe, welcoming environment within our club and throughout the Providence College campus. It strives to connect with students who identify in ways that have left them experiencing alienation and a lack of safety.
